Prevent Duty at ONELAB College
At ONELAB College, safeguarding and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do.
As part of this commitment, we meet our responsibilities under the Counter Terrorism and Security Act 2015, including the Prevent Duty, which is about protecting people from being drawn into extremism or terrorism.
Our approach is always protective, supportive and learner focused.
Prevent is not treated as a separate policy but is embedded within our wider safeguarding culture.
Our Approach
We understand that many of our learners have special educational needs and disabilities, and that this can sometimes increase vulnerability to influence, exploitation or harm. This may include risks linked to online activity, social isolation or limited life experience.
At ONELAB, Prevent is approached with care and understanding. We focus on building confidence, awareness and trust, ensuring learners feel safe, listened to and supported. Our aim is early help and protection, not punishment.
How We Support Learners
We meet our Prevent responsibilities by:
Creating a safe, supportive learning environment where learners feel respected, listened to and able to express views appropriately.
Promoting fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, in ways that are accessible and meaningful to our learners.
Teaching learners about staying safe, including understanding risks online, recognising inappropriate influence, and knowing who to talk to if they feel worried or unsafe.
Training staff appropriately so they understand the Prevent Duty, can recognise potential signs of vulnerability, and know how to respond and report concerns.
Working in partnership with local safeguarding agencies, the Local Authority, and other professionals where concerns arise.
Ensuring robust safeguarding procedures, including clear reporting routes and a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) with responsibility for Prevent.
Understanding Risk
We recognise that risk can look different for every learner. Any Prevent related concern is considered alongside individual needs, communication styles and personal circumstances. Decisions are always made in the best interests of the learner, with a strong focus on support, safeguarding and early intervention.
Freedom of Expression
ONELAB College values open discussion and freedom of expression within a safe and respectful environment.
Learners are encouraged to develop appropriate critical thinking skills and explore ideas in a supported way, with clear boundaries around language or behaviour that may cause harm.
Raising Concerns
Any concerns relating to extremism, radicalisation or vulnerability to harmful influence should be shared through our safeguarding procedures.
Concerns must be reported to the Designated Safeguarding Lead who will assess the situation and decide on appropriate next steps, including whether external agencies need to be involved.
